Variety is the spice of life. Yes, I’m talking about the different types of interior doors (obviously).

So many people overlook the flush, hinged doors that come standard in most homes. And while there’s nothing wrong with this style of door, there are so many other options that can make a big design statement and add character to the space. Today, I’d like to walk you through all of the different interior door types that you can incorporate in your home.

Types of Doors

Flush doors are your standard, flat-surfaced style. Because of their simplicity, they’re one of the cheapest options. Paneled doors, on the other hand, are more detailed and feature either raised or recessed decorative panels. They offer more visual interest than flush doors.

There are also some specialty styles. Barn doors feature slats of wood nailed together, creating a rustic look. Another notable style is the French door, which feature two paneled doors that open from the middle.

Hanging Style

How you hang your doors is an important choice both aesthetically and functionally. Here are the most popular options:

  • Hinged doors: hinges allow the door to swing open and closed.

  • Sliding doors: slide open horizontally along a track.

  • Folding doors: when pulled open, the sections fold in on themselves.

  • Pocket doors: slide open into a pocket in the wall.

Make sure you consider which type of door functions best in the space. Your standard hinged doors work well for bedrooms. Barn doors are increasingly popular for master baths. French doors classically open onto a patio or balcony, but can add some drama for your dining room too. Sliding, folding, or pocket doors are a great choice for closets.

Material

You have several options when it comes to your door’s construction. JC Huffman offers solid core, lumber core, and MDF core depending on how heavy you want the door to feel, how much noise you’d like blocked, and your budget.
